Spring is around the corner—and with spring comes the opportunity for new beginnings and fresh starts. What better way to kick off the season than with a leaner, sexier, healthier body?
When we lose muscle, we become weaker—and weakness accelerates aging while driving sex drive downhill.
Muscle gives us energy, vitality, injury protection, a youthful appearance, better insulin sensitivity, and healthier blood pressure. Muscle is the engine that drives our sexuality, overall health, and personal power.
If I had a dollar for every time a woman told me, “I don’t want to look big—I just want to look toned,” I’d be relaxing on my own island in Bora Bora.
Here’s the truth: “tightening” muscles isn’t a real thing. It’s a marketing term created to ease fears about bulking up—and it worked.
Muscles are naturally firm. But if they’re covered by body fat, they won’t be visible. Muscles can only do two things: hypertrophy (grow) or atrophy (shrink).
Looking “lean and tight” comes down to two factors:
- Adding lean muscle
- Reducing body fat
You must lose fat to reveal muscle—and you must build muscle so there’s something worth revealing.
Why Lean Muscle Matters for Women Over 40
Preserving lean muscle should be a top priority for all women over 40.
Starting after age 30, women lose approximately 5–8% of lean muscle per decade. This loss accelerates during perimenopause as estrogen and other hormone levels decline.
Muscle is the organ of anti-aging—your true Fountain of Youth. It directly influences how well you age.
More muscle means greater strength, stamina, energy, confidence, and sex drive—while reducing the risk of falls, fractures, and metabolic decline.
Muscle also boosts metabolism (calories burned at rest) and gives your body shape, symmetry, and firmness.
So don’t fear muscle—and don’t worry about getting “too big.” Even with heavy lifting (which you should be doing), women simply don’t have the hormonal profile to bulk up easily, especially after 40.
You don’t wake up looking like a bodybuilder overnight.
Dr. Eric’s Top 4 Anti-Aging Muscle-Building Tips for Women Over 40
1. Eat Adequate Protein
Most women don’t consume enough protein to support lean muscle mass—especially after 40, when protein needs increase. If you’re trying to lose fat, you need even more.
A general guideline is at least 0.65 grams of protein per pound of bodyweight, with no more than about 30 grams per meal.
Protein supplements—such as Primex 100% Hydrolyzed Protein Shakes available at drericprimex.com—can help you meet your daily needs.
2. Lift Weights
Perform full-body workouts using compound movements 2–3 times per week.
Aim for 8–15 reps per set, reaching muscular fatigue by the end of each set. If the last two reps feel easy, the weight is too light.
Your training program should also include progressive overload to continuously stimulate muscle growth.
3. Allow Proper Recovery
Women over 40 need both intensity and recovery. Schedule strength sessions 2–3 days apart to allow muscles to repair and grow.
Listen to your body—knowing when to push and when to rest is key to long-term success.
4. Get Enough Sleep
Sleep challenges are common during perimenopause and beyond. Aim for 7–8 hours of quality sleep per night.
Deep sleep is when testosterone and growth hormone are released—both critical for muscle repair, anti-aging, strength, and sex drive.
